Affectionately known as the Cowboy Capital of the World, Bandera, Texas, is a unique and wonderful place to live. The cultural diversity of Bandera makes it an eclectic place to call home; residents come from a melting pot of cultures, including Indian, Polish, Mexican, and varying Western Cultures. The city gets its name from historic battles between the Indians native to the area, including Apache and Comanche, and Spanish Conquistadors. To define the boundary between the cultures, the Spanish flew a red flag (Bandera) to ensure there was no confusion about the boundary between the hunting grounds. Bandera became a permanent settlement in 1853 when the cypress mill was established and used the abundance of cypress trees that grew along the Medina River. The mill made cypress shingles, and its prosperity allowed the town to grow and expand. The town's amazing architecture was built by the Polish who immigrated to Bandera to work in the Cypress Mill. St. Stanislaus Catholic Church is a shining example of Polish Architecture and is the second oldest Polish Church in the United States and is one of the most impressive buildings in Bandera.
Bandera earned its current and most recognized title of "Cowboy Capital of the World" in the late 1800s when Bandera was a famous staging area for the great cattle drives. When the cattle drives ended, the name stuck because many rodeo champions called Bandera home, and to honor these residents, the town erected a bronze monument on the Courthouse lawn in their honor.
